The local currency is the Quetzal (GTQ). While major hotels and restaurants in cities like Antigua or Guatemala City accept credit cards, we recommend carrying cash in Quetzales for local markets and smaller towns. US Dollars are also widely accepted in tourist areas like Petén.

To ensure your health, we recommend drinking only bottled or purified water, which is widely available throughout the country. We provide purified water during all our tours.

Because Guatemala has many microclimates, we recommend layering. Bring light, breathable clothing for the tropical heat of Tikal and the coast, but include a light jacket or sweater for the cooler evenings in Antigua or Lake Atitlán. Don’t forget comfortable walking shoes!
