Belize and Guatemala share a land border, a slice of Maya history, and — for travelers willing to cross it — a surprisingly easy way to see two very different countries on one trip.
Two Different Kinds of Trip, One Itinerary
Belize’s barrier reef, cayes and jungle lodges offer a beach-and-marine-life experience; Guatemala brings Maya ruins, colonial towns, volcanoes and highland lakes. Combining them means your trip doesn’t have to choose between “beach” and “culture and adventure” — you can genuinely have both.
A Sample Split
A common approach: start or end in Belize for diving, snorkeling or cave tubing, then cross at Melchor de Mencos into Guatemala for Tikal — only about two hours from the border — before continuing on to Antigua, Lake Atitlán, or a volcano hike depending on how much time you have left.
How Much Time Do You Need?
Ten to fourteen days lets you cover both countries without feeling rushed; a week is workable if you focus on just one or two highlights per side. Even a few extra days in Guatemala alone — Tikal plus Antigua, for example — makes a worthwhile add-on to a primarily Belize-focused trip.
