Crossing the Border from Belize to Guatemala: A Step-by-Step Guide

📅 April 6, 2026

Melchor de Mencos, on the Belize side, and its Guatemalan counterpart just across the river, is the main land border crossing between the two countries — and a genuinely easy way to combine a Belize trip with Guatemala’s Maya sites, especially Tikal, which is only about two hours from the border.

What the Crossing Involves

Travelers exit Belize at its border checkpoint, cross a short distance to the Guatemalan side, and complete entry formalities there. Requirements can vary by nationality and do change over time, so it’s worth confirming current entry requirements with the Guatemalan consulate or your government’s travel advisory before you travel.

Why Combine Belize and Guatemala

Belize’s cayes and barrier reef and Guatemala’s Maya ruins and volcanoes are different enough experiences that combining them in one trip covers a lot of ground without feeling repetitive. Tikal in particular is close enough to the border that it fits naturally into a Belize itinerary as a day trip or overnight add-on, rather than a whole separate journey.

Planning the Logistics

The border crossing itself is straightforward, but timing transportation on both sides — getting to the border, and onward from it to Flores or Tikal — is where a bit of local knowledge helps. This is exactly what we handle for travelers connecting from Belize: see our Guatemala from Belize page for routes and pickup options.
