Best Time to Visit Guatemala: A Season-by-Season Guide

📅 January 12, 2026

Guatemala doesn’t have four seasons the way North America or Europe does — it has two: a dry season and a rainy season. Which one is “best” really depends on what you want out of your trip.

Dry Season (November to April)

This is Guatemala’s most popular travel window, and for good reason. Skies are clearer for volcano hikes like Acatenango and Pacaya, roads to remote spots like Semuc Champey are easier to travel, and you’re less likely to have a rainy afternoon interrupt a day at Tikal or Lake Atitlán. December through February can get surprisingly cold at night in the highlands (Antigua, Lake Atitlán, Quetzaltenango) and cold enough at altitude on an overnight Acatenango trek to require real winter layers.

Semana Santa (Holy Week, March/April)

Antigua’s Semana Santa processions — elaborate sawdust carpets (alfombras) laid through the cobblestone streets — are genuinely one of the most spectacular events in the Americas. It’s also the busiest week of the year for tourism in Guatemala: hotels fill up and prices rise months in advance. If this is on your list, book early.

Rainy Season (May to October)

Don’t write off the rainy season. Rain in Guatemala usually means a sunny morning followed by an afternoon downpour, not an all-day washout — which still leaves plenty of time for sightseeing. The landscape is noticeably greener, tourist sites are quieter, and rates are often lower. Semuc Champey’s pools are especially striking in the green season. The main trade-off is that a handful of rural roads can be slower going after heavy rain.

Our Take

If your trip revolves around volcano hikes or you want guaranteed clear mountain views, aim for December through April. If you’d rather have quieter ruins, lower prices, and don’t mind an afternoon shower, June through September works well for most of the country. Either way, a private, flexible itinerary makes it easy to adjust for weather day to day — which is exactly what we build for every traveler. Get in touch and tell us your dates.
