Antigua Guatemala Travel Guide: What to See in 1, 2, or 3 Days

📅 January 26, 2026

Antigua is Guatemala’s former colonial capital, and for many travelers it’s the first stop in the country — cobblestone streets, colorful colonial facades, and three volcanoes (Agua, Fuego and Acatenango) visible from almost anywhere in town.

If You Only Have One Day

Start at Parque Central, walk to the ruins of the Santa Clara convent or the Church of La Merced, and climb the Cerro de la Cruz lookout for a classic postcard view of the city with Volcán de Agua behind it. End the day at a rooftop restaurant — several look directly at Fuego, and on a clear evening you can sometimes see it glow.

With Two Days

Add a coffee farm tour — Antigua sits in one of Guatemala’s best coffee-growing regions, and a half-day visit usually includes the full process from plant to cup. This is also the day to browse the artisan market and pick up textiles directly from the weavers who made them.

With Three Days or More

This is when Antigua becomes a base rather than just a stop: it’s the launch point for both the Pacaya and Acatenango volcano hikes, and close enough to Lake Atitlán and Chichicastenango for a day trip to either. Many of our multi-day itineraries use Antigua as a hub for exactly this reason.

Getting There

Antigua is roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Guatemala City / La Aurora International Airport, making it an easy first or last stop on a Guatemala itinerary.

Is Antigua Safe?

Antigua is one of the most visited and well-patrolled towns in the country. As anywhere, use normal precautions — stick to well-lit streets at night and keep valuables out of sight — and it’s a comfortable, walkable town for travelers of all experience levels.
